FANPS comprises members centered around Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, MS&AD Holdings, Japan Finance Corporation, Norinchukin Bank, and their affiliated think tanks. In collaboration with researchers in related specialized fields such as ecology, FANPS has established a platform to accumulate knowledge related to nature positive through industry-academia cooperation and is working to support companies in achieving nature positive.
FANPS has compiled solutions that contribute to nature positive into a catalog and released it for free access on their official website (in Japanese only). This catalog summarizes solutions for reducing or mitigating excessive dependence on nature or negative impacts on nature arising from business activities, or for regenerating nature. To serve as a guide for promoting nature-related initiatives, the catalog content will be expanded and revised based on domestic and international trends.
Catalog Features

- Methods and tools for analyzing nature-related risks and solutions that contribute to mitigating risks are surveyed and organized by TNFD’s (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures’) impact drivers into a catalog useful for nature positive initiatives
- Not limited to application at business sites, but includes coverage of entire supply chains.
Future Development
FANPS has been providing the “TNFD Support Service” to diagnose the degree of compliance with TNFD disclosure recommendations since October 2023. However, the result showed that for about 90% of companies interested in disclosure, analysis and evaluation of their dependence on nature and impact on nature in the regions where they operate have not yet been possible.

When aiming for a transition to nature positive, the LEAP approach recommended by the TNFD proposal becomes effective. Of these, identifying priority areas (Locate) is already being explored and disclosed by various sectors and companies. However, diagnosis of dependencies and impacts (Evaluate) and assessment of risks and opportunities (Assess) require more specialized analysis, so initiatives have not yet expanded much. Evaluate and Assess are essential for effective initiatives, goal setting, and progress management, and the provision of useful services is needed.
Utilizing the knowledge accumulated in the process of creating the NPS Catalog, FANPS will accelerate support for the transition to nature positive. In addition to continuing to discover technologies that contribute to nature positive and providing analysis services for Evaluate and Assess, FANPS will also look into collaborating on financing for nurturing startups, joint research on quantifying impacts on nature and certification, and understanding issues and response methods at the sector level. FANPS will further strengthen and evolve the alliance in a phased manner going forward.
