Last week, Interbrand Japan presented its 2024 list of the most valuable brands. There was one financial services company in the Top Ten — MUFG.

In terms of brand value, 51st place brings up the rear of the “brand unicorns”, the Top 20 have over USD 3bn in brand value each, the Top 30 over USD 2bn.
Other ranked financial services companies are as follows:
- SMBC — 23rd
- Tokio Marine — 26th
- Mizuho — 40th
- Nissay — 46th
- Meiji Yasuda — 66th
- Nomura — 67th
- Sompo Holdings — 72nd
- Orix — 81st
- Sumitomo Life — 84th
- Dai-Ichi Life — 86th
- Resona — 92nd
- MS&AD — 95th
The Interbrand ranking typically does not see any big movers. Companies might rise a couple of spots, or decline a few spots compared to the prior year. However, in this year’s ranking, Rakuten dropped 6 ranks, coming in 28th. So all those dropped calls in its mobile communications business had a direct impact on the brand value, despite a humming financial services arm.
Sompo Holdings, the of the Big Motor scandal, dropped seven spots compared to the prior year, and Orix fell by six.
