Japanese Financial Sector Enhances Cross-Border Services via AI Translation and Expanded QR Payments

Japanese financial institutions and digital payment providers are expanding their capabilities to support non-Japanese customers, focusing on seamless merchant integration and advanced AI translation tools.

PayPay Corporation expanded its cross-border infrastructure by integrating the "UnionPay App" (UnionPay QR) into its nationwide merchant network through the HIVEX® platform. The integration enables travelers holding UnionPay cards issued in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau to make code-based payments across participating Japanese merchants for dining, souvenirs, and lodging. Transactions are displayed in Japanese yen at the point of sale and automatically calculated in the user's home currency, easing operational friction for local shop owners serving non-Japanese speakers. Following this integration, PayPay's platform accepts 36 cashless payment methods across 17 countries and regions, covering digital payment services used by roughly 80% of overseas visitors to Japan.

In a parallel initiative focused on branch operations and service delivery, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) announced the deployment of "SMBC-Interpreter," a proprietary real-time translation application built for bank employees. Developed using OpenAI’s "GPT-Live-1" model, the application provides instantaneous two-way voice translation alongside synchronized text output on-screen, aiding spoken communication during complex banking explanations and operational confirmations. To protect financial privacy and corporate data security, the platform is designed so that neither audio inputs nor generated translations are stored locally, transmitted to external storage, or used to train third-party AI models.
