MUFG Innovation Partners (MUIP), the venture capital arm of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, has backed New York-based financial crime platform One Footprint, Inc. as part of the startup's $25 million Series B round. Capital from the fundraise—which was led by QED with participation from MUIP, Commerce Ventures, LightBank, and others—will be used to double Footprint's engineering and sales teams.

The investment comes amid rising financial compliance costs, which have reached over $60 billion in the US and Canada. Global illicit financial activity has surged to $4.4 trillion, driven in part by sophisticated AI-generated fraud, such as synthetic identities and complex money laundering schemes.

Founded in 2022 by CEO Eli Wach, Footprint develops AI-native infrastructure designed specifically for financial institutions and FinTech companies. The platform addresses the operational bottlenecks of legacy, manual compliance reviews—such as KYC, KYB, AML, and sanctions screening—in an era of increasingly sophisticated financial crime.

The platform relies on two core architectural components:

- **Percy (Autonomous AI Agent):** Percy functions as an end-to-end AI risk analyst capable of executing complex compliance workflows. It connects directly to trusted third-party data sources and vendor databases (e.g., LexisNexis, Experian, ComplyAdvantage), automatically ingests an institution’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and performs operational tasks. These include identity verification, alert triage, evidence collection, document extraction, and initial draft generation for SAR (Suspicious Activity Report) narratives and investigative reports.
- **Trust Fabric (Governed Knowledge Infrastructure):** Serving as the underlying data layer, Trust Fabric acts as a central "organizational memory" for compliance teams. It captures human decision-making rationale, investigative outputs, and precedent across workflows. When an analyst or AI agent makes a decision in one domain (e.g., Enhanced Due Diligence), that precedent is immediately mapped across other workflows (e.g., sanctions monitoring, KYC) to improve organizational accuracy over time.

Key Operational Capabilities & Differentiators

- **Speed and Efficiency:** Automates time-dense compliance procedures. Watchlist hit reviews that historically took up to 30 minutes can be processed in under a minute, while Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) reviews are reduced from hours to under 15 minutes.
- **Explainability and Provenance:** Built under an "agents propose, humans approve" model. Every finding generated by Percy contains full audit trails, tool logs, timestamps, and verifiable citations to eliminate "black box" risks during regulatory reviews.
- **Advanced Pattern Detection:** Identifies complex obfuscation tactics that human manual reviews frequently miss, such as synthetic identity networks, multi-layered shell companies, or complex Cyrillic transliterations on sanctions watchlists.

Through its MUFG Innovation Partners No. 3 Investment Partnership, MUIP aims to explore potential integration of Footprint’s compliance technology across the broader MUFG Group network.
