MUFG's Venture Arm Backs Doppel as AI-Driven Cyber Threats Escalate
MUFG Innovation Partners (MUIP), the corporate venture capital subsidiary of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), has made a strategic investment in San Francisco-based AI cybersecurity firm Doppel. The investment was executed through the MUFG Innovation Partners No. 3 Investment Partnership.
Founded in 2022 by CEO Kevin Tian and CTO Rahul Madduluri, Doppel specializes in defense against AI-powered social engineering attacks, including impersonation, phishing, and fraud. The platform integrates three core solutions—Digital Risk Protection (DRP), Human Risk Management (HRM), and Email Security—on a unified threat intelligence architecture to address vulnerabilities across the entire attack lifecycle.
The funding arrives amid a period of commercial acceleration for Doppel. The company recently surpassed 300 global enterprise customers following record client acquisition in the second quarter of 2026. Doppel has also expanded its product lineup, rolling out its Email Security module and an AI Managed Service for Human Risk Management in July.
To support its international operational expansion, Doppel has established new regional hubs in Toronto and Austin while scaling its team in New York City. The startup has also deepened its focus on the Japanese market with the appointment of cybersecurity veteran Hideki Ushigome as Country Manager for Japan.
According to MUIP, which manages approximately $650 million across five funds, the investment reflects growing enterprise demand for unified defense platforms capable of neutralizing sophisticated, generative AI-driven cyber risks. Capital from the transaction will be deployed toward product innovation, talent acquisition, and go-to-market scaling globally and within Japan.
