SBI Sumishin Net Bank Migrates Core Banking System to Cloud

SBI Sumishin Net Bank has decided to evolve the open-system core banking system "NEFSS (Next Evolution in Financial Services Systems)" provided by IBM Japan into a new architecture that enables expansion aligned with future growth, and to fully migrate to an Amazon Web Services cloud environment by early 2028.
Background and Purpose of This Initiative
Since commencing operations in September 2007, SBI Sumishin Net Bank has utilized cutting-edge technology as a "digital bank" that enables full banking functions including deposits, payments, and loans to be completed online, working to improve convenience, safety, and experiential value. The bank has surpassed 8.25 million accounts (as of March 2025) and 11 trillion yen in total deposits (as of August 2025), and is pursuing various initiatives to achieve sustainable growth.
"NEFSS" has operated stably for many years as the core banking system that forms the backbone of SBI Sumishin Net Bank's internet banking services. Through this initiative, by migrating to a next-generation cloud core banking architecture for digital banks that has evolved with future scalability in mind, the system will be capable of handling data volumes for over 30 million accounts and will feature a design that can flexibly respond to subsequent business growth. Operating costs are expected to be reduced by approximately 30%, and improvements in stability, availability, scalability, and efficiency will ensure development and operational speed and flexibility.
For the cloud environment, AWS was selected based on the company's internal implementation track record. The core banking system will join the already operational redundant environment using AWS Asia Pacific (Tokyo) Region and Asia Pacific (Osaka) Region multi-region setup, resulting in the migration of all major company systems to the AWS cloud environment. This will achieve efficiency improvements and enhanced agility in system processing, as well as rapid switching during failures and business continuity during disasters, realizing enhanced resilience. For customers, this will strengthen the environment for continuously providing more secure and stable services.
