SMBC Group and Climate Bonds Initiative Partner on Climate Resilience Financing
Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) and SMBC Nikko Securities, both subsidiaries of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the London-based Climate Bonds Initiative to foster and standardize the sustainable finance market for climate adaptation and resilience.
Under the terms of the agreement, the entities will collaborate to promote funding for climate resilience projects globally and across Japan. The partnership focuses on sharing expertise regarding international frameworks, taxonomy, certification standards, and impact measurement methods for climate adaptation initiatives.
In a concurrent development, SMBC announced it has obtained an Alignment Opinion from the Climate Bonds Initiative regarding its "SMBC Sustainable Finance Framework," which was initially published in March 2026. The opinion certifies that certain eligible use of proceeds within SMBC's framework align with international benchmarks, specifically the Climate Bonds Sector Criteria and the Climate Bonds Resilience Taxonomy.
This marks the first time a Japanese financial institution has secured an alignment opinion from the Climate Bonds Initiative for an internally developed sustainable finance framework applied to climate adaptation and resilience.
The eligible project categories covered under the opinion include:
- Flood, river, and landslide prevention infrastructure updates
- Coastal preservation facilities and facility floodproofing
- Emergency backup power systems and high-efficiency cooling/heat pump systems
- Resilient transportation infrastructure construction and updates
- Research and development into climate-resilient crop varieties
- Climate observation, early warning systems, and adaptation-focused ICT solutions
By combining Climate Bonds Initiative's global criteria expertise with SMBC Group’s client network and financial solutions, both institutions aim to increase transparency, build market credibility, and expand investment opportunities in climate resilience.
