Sony Financial Group’s life insurance unit has uncovered additional cases of financial misconduct by former sales representatives as it continues a massive review of approximately 2.8 million policyholders.

In a recent progress update, Sony Life Insurance revealed that an audit identified two new cases of insurance-related fraud totaling roughly ¥21.9 million across six customers. In both instances, former representatives improperly obtained funds by soliciting investments in unhandled products or misrepresenting policy surrenders for personal gain.

These findings bring the total cumulative losses from insurance-related fraud uncovered during the probe to approximately ¥56.4 million across 21 affected customers. Additionally, the insurer confirmed two new instances of former representatives engaging in unauthorized financial transactions, such as soliciting outside investments or borrowing money from clients, bringing the cumulative total in that category to ¥124.2 million.

The verification process, initiated earlier this year following disclosures in April and May, aims to eliminate "closed-door" relationships between individual sales agents and policyholders. Out of 2.8 million target customers, Sony Life reported that verification efforts for roughly 90,000 clients served by its Exclusive Agencies (Premier Agency) are substantially complete, yielding no direct insurance business fraud. However, seven agencies were found to have introduced customers to unauthorized third-party investment products without prior notice. Sony Life has since resolved to abolish the Exclusive Agency system.

The broad audit is currently on track, with the insurer having reached millions of clients via direct mail, email, and telephone to re-establish direct communication channels with corporate headquarters. Sony Life expects to complete the customer verification process for nearly all policyholders by late November 2026, with a comprehensive final report scheduled for mid-December.

The findings come as Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA) initiates an official on-site inspection of Sony Life under Article 129 of the Insurance Business Act.

Parent entity Sony Financial Group noted that while disciplinary actions and customer protection measures are actively underway in consultation with legal counsel, the ultimate impact on its consolidated financial results remains undetermined.
