Nippon Life Strengthens Domestic Footprint with Joyo Bank Alliance and Lifts Corebridge Stake to 30.3% in USD 376m Move
Nippon Life Insurance has entered into a sustainability partnership with regional lender The Joyo Bank, while concurrently deploying capital overseas to expand its ownership in U.S. retirement and life insurer Corebridge Financial.
The domestic agreement establishes a collaborative framework between Nippon Life and Joyo Bank aimed at driving sustainable finance, business growth, and regional revitalisation across their shared networks. Under the pact, the two financial institutions plan to explore co-financing arrangements and share underwriting insights on sustainable finance frameworks linked to human capital, health and productivity management, and parental leave uptake. The alliance will also channel resources into local venture ecosystems, leveraging Nippon Life group units such as Nissay Capital to provide financing and scaling support for regional startups.
Beyond capital allocation, the partnership targets workplace welfare and community engagement. Nippon Life and Joyo Bank will jointly deliver health-management advisory programs to regional employers and pool corporate welfare service offerings. The collaboration further includes youth educational initiatives and public health seminars hosted at Joyo Bank’s newly developed head office hall to serve as a community hub.
The domestic alliance comes in tandem with Nippon Life's continued international capital deployment. The Japanese life insurer has completed an additional share acquisition in Houston-based Corebridge Financial. Nippon Life paid approximately $376 million (¥59.1 billion) to acquire roughly 10.9 million shares, representing approximately 2% of Corebridge’s outstanding common stock.
The transaction lifts Nippon Life’s total ownership stake in Corebridge from roughly 28% to approximately 30.3%. The move precedes the planned closing of Corebridge’s pending merger with Equitable Holdings, which was originally announced in March 2026 and is scheduled for completion by the end of December 2026.
Following the completion of the Corebridge–Equitable merger, Nippon Life expects to hold an estimated 15.3% equity stake in the newly combined enterprise, maintaining its classification as an equity-method affiliate. Nippon Life confirmed it intends to maintain its position as a long-term strategic investor to support the enlarged group's operational growth and corporate value.
