Sompo Launches Dedicated Sharia Insurance Unit in Indonesia as Sector Assets Expand
Sompo Indonesia has commenced operations for PT Sompo Insurance Sharia ("Sompo Syariah"), establishing a standalone general Sharia insurer in compliance with Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK) regulations.
The new entity formalizes and scales the group's Islamic finance activities in the country, where Sompo Indonesia has offered Sharia-compliant asset protection products since 2017. Company executives noted that transitioning to a dedicated legal entity will allow for tighter governance, specialized underwriting, and expanded product offerings tailored to local market demand.
"Operating as an entity allows us to concentrate more fully on delivering services that support people in their daily lives," said Ratna Indrayani, Chief Executive Officer of Sompo Syariah. Indrayani highlighted that the firm will prioritize outreach, consumer education, and product innovation to broaden access to Sharia-compliant insurance.
The launch comes amid double-digit growth in Indonesia’s Islamic insurance sector. Data from the Indonesian Sharia Insurance Association (AASI) indicates that general Sharia insurance assets climbed 13.77% in the first quarter of 2026 to reach IDR 10.8 trillion.
Sompo Indonesia, which has operated in the domestic general insurance market since 1975, is a subsidiary of Sompo International Holdings, an arm of Tokyo-listed Sompo Holdings.
